The centrepiece of the traditional costume is the leather trousers – made from high-quality deerskin and with a perfect fit, they are a purchase that will last a lifetime. The rest of the traditional outfit is put together to complement the leather trousers, with the fit, materials and craftsmanship being key.
Traditional costume fashion is hardly influenced by fashion trends and remains true to itself this year too: when it comes to lederhosen, we are focusing primarily on lighter colours, a classic short cut and traditional embroidered motifs in leaf or relief stitch.
When it comes to shirts, the trend is increasingly towards the so-called ‘Pfoad’ – a traditional yet casual pull-on shirt with a short button placket and a chest fastening. The classic traditional shirt with a full-length button placket and stand-up collar also remains popular. White, blue and olive tones dominate the colour palette, and if a pattern is preferred over a plain colour, the choice tends to fall on fine stripes.
A pair of lederhosen made from deerskin or goatskin forms the basis of any traditional costume look. My tip for buying them: look for high quality and a first-class fit, and try to stick to traditional styles. The rest of the traditional outfit is put together around the leather trousers, including a shirt, waistcoat, cardigan or ‘Janker’, socks and ‘Haferl’ shoes.
Leather trousers should fit snugly and end just above the knee. As a natural material, leather changes over time, so this should be borne in mind when buying. Trousers made from chamois-tanned deerskin will shrink by about one size when worn, whilst those made from goatskin will only stretch slightly.

As a general rule, less is more. But when used correctly, accessories can demonstrate a sense of style and an eye for trends. For example, with a Charivari and a fir-coloured traditional hat made of hare’s hair, adorned with pins or hat feathers. A stylish pocket square with a traditional motif, knee-length socks or hand-knitted Loferl in solid colours and plain shades complete the traditional look for men. In terms of colour, you can match the socks to the embroidery colour of the lederhosen or to the colour of the waistcoat. Haferl shoes continue to be the classic black choice for both light and dark leather trousers. In addition, buttoned-in braces are making a comeback in 2026; these are in particularly high demand among younger customers, both in the striped rubber version and in leather, with or without a chest strap.
Both complement the traditional costume in their own way Weise. Short Jankers are a classic match for lederhosen, whilst longer Stadtjankers add a contemporary twist to the outfit. Modern colours such as blue, olive, grey or black provide fresh accents. Those who prefer a more festive look can opt for a velvet jacket – less traditional, but perfect for an elegant appearance at the Wiesn. Those who prefer a more relaxed look can wear cardigans in cable-knit or stockinette stitch, embellished with stag’s-horn or coin buttons.
